It Was Under The Bed

‘My poem plays on the childhood fear of ‘The Monster Under The Bed’. You never see it, but you know it’s there. Waiting. The repetition of the previous lines in each stanza builds up the tension, until it becomes unbearable. Incidentally, this is a close-up photograph of the edge of our bed and the darkness underneath. No sign of a monster.’
Dave is constantly amazed by the fact he was born in Sheffield, UK, in 1962. He has been an actor, a sales rep, a stand-up comedian, a dry stone waller, a singer, a civil servant, a playwright, a pub manager and a podcaster, not necessarily in that order. Currently, he is a poet and an online English tutor living with his wife (The Lovely Alison), and two cats (Risca and Alcaçuz), in the slowly-beating heart of central Portugal.
‘O meu poema brinca com o medo infantil do «monstro debaixo da cama». Nunca o vemos, mas sabemos que ele está lá. À espera. A repetição das linhas anteriores em cada estrofe aumenta a tensão, até se tornar insuportável. A propósito, esta é uma fotografia em grande plano da beira da nossa cama e da escuridão por baixo dela. Nenhum sinal de um monstro.’
Dave está constantemente surpreendido pelo facto de ter nascido em Sheffield, Reino Unido, em 1962. Já foi um ator, um representante comercial, um comediante stand-up, um pedreiro de muros de pedra seca, um cantor, um funcionário público, um dramaturgo, um gerente de bar e um podcaster, não necessariamente por esta ordem. Atualmente, é um poeta e um professor de inglês online e vive com a sua esposa (A Adorável Alison) e dois gatos (Risca e Alcaçuz) no coração lentamente pulsante do centro de Portugal.
