‘Nest is a small coiled basket made from reclaimed nylon string - slippery, slinky, and not easy to control. It’s held loosely by a metal washer at the base, but the form can shift and change. As I was making it, I kept thinking of a bird gathering what it could find - imperfect, available, instinctive.

‘It was a hard piece to make, and it stands on its own as a one-off that I cherish. Still, it sits within my wider practice, where I often explore the tension between structure and softness, and where two-dimensional materials: paper, thread, fabric-are coaxed into three-dimensional forms. This is a quieter piece, but it carries many of the same questions I return to again and again.’

Megan Sharkey is known for her innovative use of traditional hand-craft techniques. 

Fascinated by how we belong and behave in the world, she delves into what it means to be – exploring memories, emotions, and our relationships with each other and our bodies.

Megan transforms these intangible ideas into a very physical and grounded practice, mainly using a needle and thread. Through slow, repetitive stitching and lacemaking, she creates abstract forms in two and three dimensions, merging simplicity with complexity.

«Nest é um pequeno cesto enrolado feito de cordão de nylon recuperado — escorregadio, flexível e difícil de controlar. É mantido frouxamente por uma arruela de metal na base, mas a forma pode mudar e transformar-se. Enquanto o fazia, pensava constantemente num pássaro a recolher o que encontrava — imperfeito, disponível, instintivo.

Foi uma peça difícil de fazer e é única, pelo que a aprecio muito. Ainda assim, insere-se na minha prática mais ampla, na qual exploro frequentemente a tensão entre estrutura e suavidade e onde materiais bidimensionais — papel, fio, tecido — são transformados em formas tridimensionais. Esta é uma peça mais tranquila, mas traz muitas das mesmas questões às quais volto repetidamente.»
